Sasha Lurje (Latvia; voice)

from Riga, Latvia, has been singing since the age of 3 in various groups and styles, including classical, folk, jazz, rock and pop. She also has been active in musical theatre and improvised theatre. Since 2003, she has been researching traditional Yiddish singing style and repertoire, exploring both secular and religious vocal materials. With her band Forshpil, she is developing a new style of Yiddish music that integrates traditional Yiddish singing with a contemporary sound. She has performed and taught Yiddish singing in Russia, Europe and Canada. She studies intercultural relations at the Latvian Academy of Culture with a focus on cognitive linguistics.
