This year's opening concert is dedicated to the beloved memory of our friend and colleague, Adrienne Cooper, who passed away on December 25, 2011.
Adrienne was one of the greatest Yiddish singers of her generation, and no less influential as a teacher and cultural activist. We were fortunate that she taught several times in Yiddish Summer, and she was greatly respected and loved by her colleagues and students for her artistry and humanity equally. The artists in tonight's concert perform repertoire that represents a personal connection to Adrienne. back

Simkhat haNefesh was founded in 2008, dedicated to Jewish music from the Middle Ages through the Baroque, with a special focus on "Early Yiddish Song." The ensemble members are all specialists in Early Music, proponents of historically informed performance practice bound to active research, requiring expertise in Hebrew as well as Western and Eastern Yiddish. For all them, the project is a "labor of love" which continuously develops. Until now, Simkhat haNefesh has performed primarily by invitation of Jewish organizations and institutions at Jewish-themed conferences, but the ensemble hopes to reach wider audiences in the future. back

'Round Midnight – Alpenklezmerglühen

Alpenklezmerglühen: Bavarian * Yiddish * wild & kosher
It's all happening in Bavarian and in Yiddish, too – wild and raw, but also gently and soulfully.
Andrea Pancur (vocal) München-Ramersdorf, and Ilya Shneyveys (accordion, piano) Riga-Lettland encounter each other and present only the finest Alpine Klezmer. They perform ancient songs, so ancient, in fact, that neither the Bavarian nor the Jew realizes that they each love singing them. The two musicians researched and dusted off old folksong repertoire and, with their motto "long live the kosher mountain yodel!", set off with new repertoire in their backpacks.
The Yiddish Hora takes the Bavarian Ländler warmly by the hand and dance, circle and spin themselves over the peaks of the Alps in the glow sounds of klezmer. back

For more than 25 years, Deborah Strauss and Jeff Warschauer have been among the best-known and best-loved musicians of the American klezmer revival. They regularly teach workshops and perform concerts around the world. Tonight in Weimar, they perform music from their new CD, "Once I Had a Fiddle."
Tonight's audience will also hear be treated to a work-in-progress by the Quartet "Voices of Ashkenaz." Following a rehearsal period in Weimar, the four musicians from the USA, Israel/Ukraine and Germany offer the first fruit of their journey in Yiddish-German song worlds, exploring lyrics and melodies that survived in parallel in both cultures and bringing them back together again here.

'Round Midnight – Rumänische Fantasien
With Johannes Paul Gräßer & Szilvia Csaranko
Johannes Paul Gräßer and Szilvia Csaranko have been investigating the different genres of Klezmer in for years.
Inspired by the sound of traditional Yiddish music, they connect most to the sound of classical music. The two are inspired by the music of Joseph Solinskis, specifically the 1911 recording "Rumeynische Fantasien" which for the first time interpreted traditional melodies with the supposed classical musician. Together, the music of these two musicians retain a high degree of musical intensity through out their chamber music-like performances.
Johannes also plays in the Modern Klezmer Quartet and with Sher on a Shier. Szilvia plays with A Glezele Vayn – the connection between Klezmer, Balkan and Alpine-folk. The two musicians played together for the first time at the Yiddish Summer Weimar 2008. back

A Glezele Vayn + Jam Session
With A Glezele Vayn
Musical exploratory spirit, twisted humor and irrepressible playfulness unite with Hungarian precision, Yiddish melancholy and Allgauer mountain cheese. Our music comes from the Balkans, from Yiddish shtetls of Eastern European and from the Alps. Chief sound hunter Brezi Moishele casts a spell with a deep bass tone D, a farmhouse gets vocal coaching and the audience cruises by ship via the Danube to the Black Sea, from time to time reveling in song and self-made poems.
A Glezele Vayn charms with a pleasurable mix of tradition and willfulness. Not only notes are captured in spells, but the listeners, too! And spoons are for more than eating…
Followed by a jam session.

The Belf Project 1912 – 2012
Ever since the recordings of Belf's Romanian Orchestra re-appeared during the late 20th century "klezmer renaissance," musicians have been fascinated by the ensemble's highly idiosyncratic sound. Is it somehow typical of an earlier Yiddish music aesthetic, or an exotic outlier, or possibly even a parody? How would we know? Who was V. Belf? Where did he come from? One thing is for sure: every major contemporary klezmer musician has had to come to terms with the Belf repertoire and sound in one way or another. As the answers to the historical questions have begun to emerge, performers have tried to unlock the secret of the Belf sound. Four young musicians from France have discovered some of the most important keys - enjoy the surprise! back

Klezmer music and Yiddish song are parts of the larger world of "Yidishkayt" and a real understanding of them requires knowledge of their cultural context. The participants of the workshop “Klezmer, Yiddish Song & Yiddish Culture” are in the middle of a journey which includes exploring this year's special topic, “Ashkenaz." In their presentation they'll share the results of a week of intensive work.
