David Kaufman (Canada; photographer, filmmaker)

a Toronto-based photographer and filmmaker, is one of the few documentarians in Canada creating films primarily on Jewish themes. His first film, A. M .Klein: The Poet As Landscape, is a widely distributed biography and celebration of the esteemed Canadian-Jewish poet. It was first broadcast on the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation network in 1980. Subsequently, Kaufman worked for eighteen years as a documentary director for two of CBC TV’s leading programs, The Journal and The Fifth Estate.

Since 1999 he has worked independently, producing and directing films which have appeared on CBC, the History channel, Bravo! Canada, and PBS. His films include: From Despair to Defiance: The Warsaw Ghetto Uprising (2003, 72 minutes), the only feature film on the subject in English; The New Klezmorim: Voices Inside the Revival of Yiddish Music (2000, 69 minutes), a music film which explores the Klezmer revival; and most recently, Song of the Lodz Ghetto (2010, 121 minutes), a feature-length history and concert film about the Lodz Ghetto and its famous street singer, Yankele Herszkowicz, with music performed by Brave Old World.

Kaufman also has a career as a photographer, specializing in large-format architectural imagery. His recent photography exhibition of Toronto heritage streetscapes, Early Sunday Morning, was named a must-see show of the 2013 CONTACT Photo Festival by Toronto Life, NOW Magazine and Xtra! ! In addition to his architectural studies, Kaufman has done a significant amount of work documenting the Jewish music scene, and has made eight trips to Poland to photograph Jewish historic sites there. Other recent exhibitions include: The Posthumous Landscape: Jewish Sites of Memory in Poland Today, featuring large-scale images of Polish Jewish cemeteries, synagogues, neighborhoods and Holocaust sites, and Vessels of Song: Faces of New Jewish Music, featuring portraits of the leading contemporary performers in Jewish music and candid images of their students and fans.
Kaufman is the official photographer of the KlezKanada festival near Montreal and the Ashkenaz festival in Toronto.
