Tsulib Chana – The opening of Yiddish Summer 2014
July 19 3 p.m. @OMA

The opening of Yiddish Summer 2014 is dedicated to the memory of Chana Mlotek z’’l, one of the greatest archivists, folklorists and researchers of her generation, who sadly passed away in 2013.

A major part of Chana's work was dedicated to bringing the countless treasures of Yiddish song back to the people, to keep a vanishing cultural heritage alive. In that spirit, the opening event of Yiddish Summer 2014 is about sharing Yiddish songs together.

On opening day, many of the artists who will later perform concerts during Yiddish Summer will be on hand to share their love of Yiddish songs. At the top of each hour from 3-7 pm, one or more of the festival artists will first perform a short set selected from the hundreds of Yiddish songs collected by Chana Mlotek and then lead a short sing-along with you, our guests. It's the perfect opportunity to get to know the artists in a relaxed and informal setting, to listen to and sing some beautiful and rare Yiddish songs, to enjoy a drink or a snack in the OMAcafé or the OMA garden, and to mix and mingle with people who come to visit Yiddish Summer Weimar from all over the world. You can join us for as little or as long as you like.

Then at 8 pm, we will offer the first A shtim fun harts of the festival in the OMAcafé.  We invite you to join us to share songs, music and stories, not as our audience but as our guests. The teachers and participants will bring in their own personal stories, favorite songs, melodies, even jokes and anything else they feel like sharing, and we invite you to do the same. We are curious to hear the stories and songs our guests love. Bring your guitar, ukulele or flute, your story book, your songs from the childhood, your favourite dance, your beloved joke and most importantly your joy and open heart!

We hope you can join us for the opening event of Yiddish Summer 2014 in the OMA!
With Alan Bern, Patty Farrell, Sveta Kundish, Sasha Lurje, Andrea Pancur, Vanessa Vromans, Josh Waletzky and other Yiddish Summer Weimar 2014 artists.
